Finally, the last in our series of things to avoid doing, we have a listener who flips the conversation toward them or one ups, and doesn’t stay tuned in. I bet you’ve heard something like this before: “Oh, yeah – that reminds me of the time I did that, only better/worse…” While there may be appropriate times for sharing your story, when actively Listening to someone generally isn’t the time.
Now, if you’re like me and you are nodding your head and going Yes, I get NOT to do this, I have experienced this before and I didn’t like it, but what do I DO?
Be a Listener who connects with compassion. Stay present and focused. Know what to shake off—that is, what isn’t yours.
